Maggam work designs are a type of embroidery work. Embroidered Aari or Maggam work takes inspiration from the style of hand-in-hand art that prevailed over machine work in Mughal times. As time passed, the Maggam work became a common style and was within the reach of the ordinary man.
Only skilled artisans were called on by the Mughal emperors to stitch royal and fit suits for Royal queens, princesses, princes, and the Emperor himself. Maggam work, also known as Khatla work or Aari embroidery, is used in both women's and men's costumes, but its best-known applications are in blouses.
