Getting a gorgeous fresh mehndi design inscribed on your hands and feet is more than just a typical Indian custom. When we were in school, we used to look forward to the holidays so that we could either make arrangements with our mother's preferred mehndi artist to come to the house and adorn our young hands with the splendour of henna or visit a mehndi artist who was seated with a book full of mehndi in a nearby market. We used to marvel at the beautiful hands and legs of our mother and other family members at home on important occasions like Karwa Chauth and Diwali. When mehndi stopped being just a tradition to be followed, its role, which is always evolving, reached new heights.
